Art has always been a major interest in my life, ever since I began drawing in early childhood. My love of painting was fostered by my own observations of people and the world around me, which led to a desire to interpret what I saw.  My continued fascination with the interaction of shapes, colours and textures has been a journey of discovery.  Watching the process of creation when colours weave their magic can be both a very exciting and also extremely  frustrating experience.

I started with the usual pencils and watercolours but gradually moved on to oil paints, which I love, and eventually experimented with acrylics and other media. Being a versatile artist I paint a wide variety of subject matter in a painterly, traditional style.  The South Island of New Zealand has been an important influence in my painting as the open spaces of sky, mountains and sea dominate my landscapes.  Another strong interest in my work is the human figure.  From nudes to portraits, this fascinating subject has always been a favourite to which I return again and again.

  •

Why do I paint ?

  • To express a unique vision of the world
  • To explore colours and shapes
  • To extract meaning from chaos
  • To create something new
  • To give form to ideas, thoughts and feelings
